Incorporating a variety of cultural elements from different cultures. The Corpse Bride is a 2003 stop-motion animated musical fantasy film by Tim Burton, produced by Cartier and shot in England. It tells the story of Victor, a young man who has been engaged to his long-time girlfriend Victoria for many years but never wed her because he became obsessed with death after an argument with his father, who forbade him from ever marrying or starting a family. Victor doesn't think that people should marry and start families if they're going to die anyway, which leads him to fall in love with another girl named Emily only moments before her wedding ceremony. He tells Emily that he's going to be late and rushes to find her, but she is no longer there; he finds her wedding dress instead. He follows the dress to Emily's grandmother's house, which is full of items symbolizing their doomed relationship like an engagement ring and a broken heart. During the wedding, Victor meets Emily's charming pet rooster, who convinces him to remain in the world after death as a bride who will love him. But as Victor prepares to cut himself out of his dead body, he realizes that his fiancée is about to be married and that he has promised not to leave her alive. Desperate to help Emily, Victor makes an agreement with the Devil, whom he says he has dealt with before. The Devil agrees to send him into the Land of the Dead to try to save Emily's soul after her wedding. Victor arrives in the world of the dead where he meets "The Ghost of Christmas Past". The ghost takes him to his childhood playground where he meets Emily as a child. The two are quick friends and begin playing together until Victor's parents appear. He is quickly sent home by his mother for being too rough with the girl. Later that night, Victor's father dies due to anger-induced heart failure, leaving him shocked and depressed for years, even though his mother tells him not to feel that way. Victor returns to the Land of the Dead and finds Emily's spirit who has been stuck there for years because she was unable to marry Victor. The Devil revokes Victor's bargain if he wants to leave the Land of the Dead, but he accepts anyway. He finds his way back to Emily's house, where he meets her young adult self. They take an oath to marry each other before meeting again in their future died-out bodies twenty years later. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the first stop-motion film to be nominated since "Kiki's Delivery Service" won in 1989, which predates this film by several years. The film placed fifth on Entertainment Weekly's list of top-grossing movies in North America for its opening weekend. The film has a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 179 reviews, with an average rating of 6.7/10. The site's consensus states: "Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" is an often dark and morbid fairy tale, but also a visually rich and inventive one." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 65 out of 100 based on 35 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". In 2008 it was named by Village Voice as one of the 25 best animated films made since 2000. 8eeb4e9f32 14
